THE LAST STRAW SEYCHELLES

Project Managers: Zara Pardiwalla & Karine Rassool / Project Officer: Rosetta Alcindor

Launched in July 2018, The Last Straw Seychelles is a campaign, supported by the GEF Small Grants Programme, to reduce the use of plastic straws in Seychelles, through individual commitments to stop using plastic straws and commitments from venues to stop serving them.

7 reasons why plastic straws suck

  1. Plastic straws are used ONCE and only for a few minutes but remain on earth for centuries.

  2. They are almost never recycled.

  3. They are littered, left on beaches, blown into the ocean by the wind, or find their way into the sea through drains and waterways.

  4. They have been found stuck in sea turtles’ nostrils and in seabirds’ stomachs – proving to be deadly.

  5. Like other plastics, they do not biodegrade. They break down into smaller pieces called microplastics (<5mm).

  6. Research has shown that many marine organisms are eating microplastics and in this way microplastics and contaminants can travel up the food chain into higher-level predators, such as tuna and swordfish, that we humans eat, potentially exposing us to unhealthy toxic chemicals.

  7. Plastic straws are among the top 10 items collected on coastal clean ups worldwide. We collect a lot in Seychelles too!
