The Children's House bans single-use plastics after screening of A Plastic Ocean
On Monday 3rd September 2018, The Ocean Project Seychelles facilitated a screening of the documentary, A Plastic Ocean, to a group of 10 staff, including teachers, of The Children’s House – Montessori Pre-School. The documentary illustrates the shocking amount of plastic pollution in the world’s oceans and the impacts it is having on marine life.
We were delighted to hear that, following the screening, staff of the school have pledged to intensify their efforts to reduce the school’s waste and to ban single-use plastics at the school. The Director of the school, Miss Lucy Talbot-Ponsonby had this to say about the event – “[w]e teachers are the role models that can educate children to eventually reduce the amount of marine debris”. She further added that “[a] large part of their mission is to nurture the children’s inherent attachment with nature as the future caretakers of the environment.”
The Children’s House opened its doors in 1996 and currently has 47 children, aged 2 – 5 years old, and 18 children, aged 6 – 9 years old, attending pre-school and primary school respectively.
We have multiple public and private screenings of the documentary scheduled over the next few months. The purchase of the movie screenings have been made possible due to a grant obtained from the GEF – UNDP – Small Grants Programme (SGP).
