SEYCHELLES' BIGGEST BEACH CLEAN UP

Every year, Seychelles joins the rest of the world to take part in the Clean Up the World event. This year, the event was celebrated under the theme “Lapropte I nou responsabilite” which translates to “It is our responsibility to keep our country clean”.

For the first time, The Ocean Project Seychelles, in partnership with the Seychelles Sustainable Tourism Foundation (SSTF), participated in the Clean Up the World event by organising Seychelles’ Biggest Beach Clean Up, the biggest collaboration between non-governmental organisations (NGOs), public bodies and private organisations to take place in Seychelles.

On Saturday 15thSeptember, TOP and SSTF brought together over 50 organisations to host 27 simultaneous clean ups, across 7 islands, including 2 clean ups at sea. In the space of only 1 hour, approximately 700 volunteers collected over 3.5 metric tonnes (MT) of rubbish!

We’d like to extend to our immense gratitude to our partners that came together to host or participate in a clean up:

The sea clean ups were made possible through a partnership with the Seychelles Sports Fishing Club (SSFC) whereby 3 boats (Cheetah, Instigator, and Eden Island Marina Boat) cleaned the Marine Charter basin.

As always, the real work starts post-clean up by all of us changing the way we do things - refusing single-use plastics, switching to reusable alternatives, and keeping up the fight to protect that which gives us life - the oceans. See how you can get involved.

The clean ups were made possible due to generous support of GEF Small Grants Programme, Environment Trust Fund, Hunt, Deltel & Co. Ltd., Ferox Feed Pty Ltd., and the Landscape and Waste Management Agency.
