Although plastic straws amount to a tiny fraction of ocean plastic, they are one of the most insidious polluters. They are also largely unnecessary! The Last Straw Seychelles campaign aims to engage consumers to change their habits and say no to plastic straws.
7 REASONS WHY PLASTIC STRAWS SUCK
-
Plastic straws are used ONCE and only for a few minutes but remain on earth for centuries.
-
They are almost never recycled.
-
They are littered, left on beaches, blown into the ocean by the wind, or find their way into the sea through drains and waterways.
-
They have been found stuck in sea turtles’ nostrils and in seabirds’ stomachs – proving to be deadly.
-
Like other plastics, they do not biodegrade. They break down into smaller pieces called microplastics (<5mm).
-
Research has shown that many marine organisms are eating microplastics and in this way microplastics and contaminants can travel up the food chain into higher-level predators, such as tuna and swordfish, that we humans eat, potentially exposing us to unhealthy toxic chemicals.
-
Plastic straws are among the top 10 items collected on coastal clean ups worldwide. We collect a lot in Seychelles too!
